Cellular senescence is a cell fate, distinct from apoptosis, and a potent anti-cancer mechanism that arrests the proliferation of cells at risk for malignant transformation. Paradoxically, senescent cells also contribute to aging and many age-related pathologies. I will discuss how and why this cell fate has such seemingly disparate effects.
